Touch Rugby is one of the biggest sport success stories of recent years – experiencing a massive growth in popularity in the UK and across the world.
For those of you who don’t know, Touch refers to a game derived from rugby league that began in Australia and New Zealand. Players don’t tackle each other but instead touch their opponents using their hands on any part of an opponent’s body or the ball. It’s fast and dynamic and is one of the very few sports that are mixed-sex, meaning that men and women can play on the same team and against each other.
This gives it an added appeal making the game increasingly popular in schools, universities and amongst adults of all ages. Those retiring from rugby often take it up, as well as people with hockey, netball or football backgrounds.
Governance and Development
England Touch is the national governing body for Touch in the country, and it is responsible for the governance and development of the sport. As a membership organisation, those who sign up include teams, coaches, referees and players – currently, their membership stands at around 2,000.
England Touch organises tournaments, runs the national representative teams, and offers access to training courses, as well as help and advice on grassroots development.
The organisation has been in existence since 1995, and since April 2015, England Touch has been using PaySubsOnline admin management software to manage its membership – a smart move!
Richard King is their membership, insurance and affiliation manager. During a conversation with him, he said, “as an organisation, in addition to all the playing and development opportunities we offer, a key additional benefit for our members is the insurance cover we provide, which includes public liability, professional indemnity, and personal accident cover.
“I heard about PaySubsOnline from a local gymnastics club. We were already managing our membership online, but this was through a previous insurance provider. We wanted to expand our insurance offering by switching provider, so it suited our purposes to find a new system for our online membership management at the same time.”
England Touch started by trialling the new system with league and event operators. As it worked so well, they moved their entire operation to Pay Subs Online in January 2017.
Ease of Administration
While most clubs that start to use online membership software come to it from an offline position, England Touch had used an online process previously. Pay Subs Online, however, made the administration process much easier, removed the reliance on a third-party, and offered a significant reduction in the transaction fees. Since joining PaySubsOnline, England Touch have reduced their transaction fees by 70% – no small feat!
Pay Subs Online has also allowed the governing body to customise the type of memberships they offer, considering the diversity of clubs and individuals who belong to England Touch.
There are exciting times ahead for England Touch, as this year they are organising the European Touch Championships which will take place at Nottingham University in July, bringing together some 50-80 teams from more than 15 nations.
Richard added: “The old system couldn’t cope with the different strands of membership, so Pay Subs Online works much better for us. Our membership is multiplying, and will only continue to grow in popularity as awareness of the sport increases. In the next few years, we’re looking at consolidating our membership, bringing more clubs and particularly schools and universities on board. We’re also looking to support the expansion of referees and coaches involved.”
PaySubsOnline provides the perfect solution for that growth to continue, and we wish them all the very best for the future!
